Bayer

Freelance Technical Writer

I was hired to write a variety of technical content for both employees and external audiences. To create the content, I used my own research, existing information, and input from SMEs. I gathered information from the SMEs by using a combination of in-person and phone interviews, emails, and annotations/comments in draft documents.

I really enjoyed this opportunity — it let me step out of the software world, learn interesting new things, and put my Science Writing class knowledge to use.

My Role

Project samples

eNewsletter article (Bayer MaterialScience NAFTA division)

The High-performance synthetic leather without toxic solvents: The economic and environmental advantages of Impranil aqueous dispersions article showcases my scientific writing.

I wrote the article for both internal and external audiences who had a basic scientific background and an interest in Bayer’s new technology for sustainably producing synthetic leather (particularly in the automotive sector).

After light edits, the article was published on the public eAutomotive Update site (no longer available).

Sustainability handbook (Bayer North America)

I wrote the Sales that advance sustainability: Understanding and applying life cycle thinking to our products handbook primarily for Bayer’s Advance Sales teams; it aligned with the company's strategic push toward lifecycle thinking (LCT) and sustainability.

Note: The excerpt contains potentially sensitive information; some text has been redacted or rendered in Lorem Ipsum.

The document delves into these concepts, provides case studies and example scenarios relevant to each business division, and tells users exactly what to do to comply with this initiative. Because it was a large document that had to meet the needs of many users, I created a roadmap to direct specific roles to specific chapters.

I used my own research, existing information, and many in-person or phone interviews to create this content.

This is one of my favorite freelance projects; it was a great combination of information types and posed unique challenges in how to use relatively basic technology (MS Word-to-PDF) to deliver custom content to various readers.
